How to do a Sleep Test in Lab, House and Hotel

Many people have trouble falling asleep and need a way to get to sleep. Sleep apnea is a serious health condition that affects many adults. According to local studies by SingHealth in Singapore, about 15% of adult Singaporeans have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Patients suffer from episodes of interrupted breathing during sleep, reducing the quality of restful sleep and increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and arrhythmia.

If you're wondering how to get a sleep study done, you're not alone. Luckily, there are several ways to do this. You can get a sleep study either in a lab, hotel or your house, and you may want to prepare ahead of time. Your sleep medicine provider will review these with you beforehand.

We have a few tips which can make the whole sleep test experience easier. After reading this article, you'll be well-prepared for your upcoming sleep study.

Sleep Study in a Sleep Lab

An In-lab sleep study is done in a lab that resembles a hotel. They arrive at the sleep center two hours before they normally go to bed, and are expected to stay overnight. Then, they can return home in the morning. If they work night shifts, they can also go in for the test during the day. The day before, they should avoid caffeine, and napping.

During a sleep lab study, technicians use specialized equipment to monitor your breathing while you sleep. These devices are similar to a baby monitor, which means that you'll probably feel some pressure while you're in the lab, but they work on a different level. They deliver a higher level of pressure when you breathe in, and a lower level when you exhale. You may also receive oxygen bolstering your breathing during the study, so you can feel comfortable during the test.

WatchPAT Sleep Study at Home or Hotel

Another option is to have the sleep test delivered to your house or hotel on the chosen date. During this study, a technician will place airflow sensor WatchPAT on you. You will also have a small sensor attached to your chest and wristband to measure heart rate and body position while you sleep. The oximeter will measure oxygen levels in your blood and a small finger sensor will monitor your breathing.
