Understanding your sleep
Waking up with headaches, snoring all night or feeling tired during the day?
A sleep study can help identify what is happening while you sleep and give you a clearer picture of your sleep health.
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly slows or stops during sleep.
When this happens, your brain may briefly wake you up to restore normal breathing. These interruptions can happen many times throughout the night, often without you remembering them.
The result? Your body may spend the night working harder than it should, even though you were technically asleep.
What Happens During Sleep Apnea?
Airway opens
Normal breathing while asleep
Airway narrows or closes
Breathing becomes restricted or temporarily stops.
Brain responds
Your body briefly reacts to restore breathing before the cycle starts again.
Could your sleep be affecting your day?
Sleep apnea doesn’t always look like falling asleep at your desk.
Some signs happen while you’re asleep. Others show up in your everyday life.
At night
- Loud or persistent snoring
- Gasping, choking or pauses in breathing
- Restless or disrupted sleep
- Frequent trips to the bathroom at night
- Tossing and turning
During the day
- Waking up feeling unrefreshed
- Daytime tiredness or sleepiness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Morning headaches
- Feeling irritable or low on energy
What can a sleep study tell you?
A sleep study records different signals while you sleep to look for signs of sleep-disordered breathing and other sleep-related issues.
Breathing
How air moves in and out while you sleep.
Oxygen levels
How your blood oxygen levels change throughout the night.
Heart rate
Changes in your heart rate during sleep.
Breathing effort
Whether your body is working harder to breathe.
Snoring
Patterns of snoring throughout the night.
Body position
Whether breathing events are more common in certain positions.
Your sleep tells a story.
The information collected during the study can help show patterns in your breathing and sleep, including measures such as your Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), oxygen levels and breathing patterns.
Your results are then reviewed and interpreted by an appropriate healthcare professional to help understand what may be happening and what to consider next.
